Clearly we did not "win" just because we kicked John Howard out on his arse, but it all comes as no surprise to me. That we are still fighting is proof no real change will come about while we continue to live under capitalism, and that goes for countless other issues besides refugee rights. Both major political parties' main aim is to run capitalism, which means putting profit before people. It is in capitalism's nature to marginalise and demonise. The only way this exploitative system can make any profit out of our labour is to keep us fighting amongst ourselves instead of uniting against our common enemy which would make slaves of all working people, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, black, white, asian, or none of the above. Yet, at the touch of an internet button, money is allowed to zip around the world at lightning speed to where it can be "invested" more favourably, no questions asked. Money is never stopped at the border and interviewed about it's moral origins, but ordinary working people are supposed to stay put, because right there is where profit is being made from their misery. And while we're on the subject of sleazy politicians who do nothing for anybody but themselves and their capitalist mates, look at the way Walter gets internet broadband. Some of my rellies in England cannot believe the broadband here is crap. |
