Mt Morgan and Area Information
Welcome to Ferns Miners Rest, Mount Morgan, the hinterland of the beautiful Capricorn Coast
Mount Morgan was established as a gold mining town in 1882, and became one of the largest and richest mines in the world. In its 99 year history it produced 225,000 kg. of gold, 50,000 kg. of silver and 360,000 tons of copper, only ceasing operation in 1981. Today it is a quaint, historic township of around 3,000 people, situated 40 kms south-west from Rockhampton.
Things to do in Mount Morgan
> Take a tour - see the mine and the dinosaur footprints - a remnant from the jurassic period
> Visit the Historical Museum, for an insight into the town's mining heritage.
> Have a hearty evening meal at one of the old-time pubs, and chat a while with the locals.
> Visit the Mount Morgan Railway Station (established 1898), now the Tourist Information Centre.
> See archived film about the cog railway, built to bring supplies up the steep range.
> Grab a heritage map, and follow the walking trail past historical sites.
> View the mine site from Tipperary Point, and check out the swinging bridge, one of only two remaining in Qld.
> Stroll through the cemetery. the Linda Memorial remembers the men killed in underground mining from 1894 to 1909, and there is a Chinese Heung Lew, built in 1890 and one of only three remaining in Australia.
> Play a few holes of golf, or check out the local bowling greens.
Things to do in the Capricorn Area
> Go into Rocky for shopping or a visit to the movies, art gallery, or theatre; visit the reknowned Botanical Gardens and zoo on the Southside and the superb newer native gardens and waterfall on the Northside; walk along Quay Street, admiring the river on one side, and the heritage buildings on the other; spend a day at the Northside Rock Pool; admire the view from Mt Archer, bushwalk in the National Parks; play golf, tennis, lawn balls, ten-pin bowling; squash, croquet.
> Head to the Cammoo Caves for an underground experience; or to the Capricorn Coast (Keppel Island, Yeppoon, Emu Park, Keppel Sands, etc.) for the beach experience; to Gracemere for a beef experience; or to Mount Hay for a fossicking experience.
