THERE WAS A KID

THE DAM WAS TEN MILES LONG, and about five miles wide. At its lower end, and on both sides, its banks were half a mile high, and there was grass there higher than your head. At its entrance, where water flowed into it and filled it in wet times, there was a mud beach, a mile wide and very dangerous, because you could get bogged there, and you could disappear forever. If you were lucky you would go down only up to your neck, and they could pull you out with a rope tied to an enormous Clydesdale horse called Slow Coach.
