Native pepper..............
Occurs in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania in cool moist temperate areas. A large shrub to small tree.
Its leathery leaves and berries both contain hot tasting compounds. Not unlike the pepper used in main stream cooking. The berry does have a distinctive fruity after taste.
Ideal in savouries, cheeses, pickles, mustards, pate etc. Berry is also used in brewing a whiskey for the fruitiness.
Leaf is collected in Tasmania, starting in February and the berry from March. Harvested from the wild in the N/W of the island.
