- Birth*: Gilbert Sibree Taylor was born on 10 May 1875 at The Terrace, Nafferton Rd, Great Driffield, Yorks.2
- He was the son of William Taylor and Martha Sibree.1
- Anecdote*: Gilbert grew up in Driifield. His father was heavily involved in the Methodist chucrh which he and his father had built. Gilbert grew tired of going to church three times on Sunday. He used to joke, "Where was Moses when God turned out the lights? Answer; "In the dark";(Olga). The implications are obvious in this remark. It reflects his feelings. He went to a private school and later worked as a tavelling salesman for a typewriter company. He was boarding with the young couple Arthur and Mary Holden in Leeds. They were married1th August 1897. When Mary became pregnant in Nov 1899 a girl was born on 20 July 1900 named Edna. She was registered as Edna Holden by the father. For the census of 30 Mar 1901, Mary Hannah Holden was living with Edna in the house of her father, William Broadbent. Gilbert was boarding in Ipswich as a single man. He was to take Mary as his partner with his daughter to Bristol for the birth of Myra. Mary was calling herself Mary Hannah Taylor. They lived together as man and wife, having 5 children in all. In 1921 Mary Hannah died from pneumonia. Edna had a job in a bank, Myra managed a dry cleaners, Olga went to live with Hilda in Driffield, Dagma went to live with the two elder sisters as reported, and Eric went into a home before he joined the Navy. Details varied according to whom and when you asked. Olga's memories of this difficult time were not good. Gilbert was a clever man, capable of making things like a dolls' house. In the early days he rented and was said to do the odd moonlight flit to avoid the rent. Both he and his wife liked a drink and Olga remembers waiting for them to come home from the pub, for her dinner. He had no time for the staid Taylor and Sibree relations.
