In 1929 he went with his wife, initially toPeking for a few months' language study and then to the markettown of Tsangchow, 80 miles south of Tiensin. These were theturbulent years of the war lords, and the small hospital hadto cope with gunshot wounds as well as the usual surgical, orthopaedic,obstetric, gynaecological, paediatric, and medical cases. Therewere only two to five doctors, including Chinese colleagues,and Geoff's work involved all these disciplines. After homeleave in 1936 he returned to work in Japanese occupied Chinauntil Pearl Harbour, when he was interned with his wife in Shanghaiand worked as a camp doctor. A second son was born in camp,and after the war Geoff went back to China, working there for threeyears under communist rule. But the position of foreigners becameintolerable and he was then posted to India, where he remaineduntil retirement. Brought up to abhor waste, he had an instinctfor thrift that was sharpened by his internment experience,and, being very practical, he could fix almost anything. Predeceasedby his wife, Miriam, he leaves two sons (both doctors).
